CP620 Charger Frequently Asked Questions

1. Charger type

There are several types of charger.

Chargers balance bypass through a resistor such as B6, icharger308 and chargers that balance independently such as A6, CB86 or CB86plus.

(1) Bypass balance charger(normal balancing charger)

Series charger charge through power wire, without limited of charge current while the balance current is bled from the 4.2 cell through a resistor to the others which are still at a lower voltage. This kind of charger is limited by the heat dissipation in the resistors, the balance phase will take a long time if the cells are well out of balance to begin with. Balance currents are normally limited to 300-500mA.

(2) Independent balance charger

Independent balance charger have the independent power circuit, for example CB86PLUS, six independent power supply built-in ensure every single battery cell charge and balance independently, never worry about the problem of heat radiation. The balance current is the charge current.

Independent balance charger charge through balance wire, while the max charge current is limited by balance wire, only can up to 6A. Most of the people use icharger 308 for charge and then use A6 or CB86/CB86PLUS for balance once any cell have fully charged.

(3) Hybrid balance charger

Combination with icharger 308 and CB86PLUS, CP620 starts charging through power wire with 30A series, once any cell is fully charged, it will change to independent balance mode automatically which charging through balance wire, balance current will up to 6A(same as the charge current of CB86PLUS/CB86). Minimise charge time and waste heat.

2. Power supply choosing

(1) Input power supply

Most of large power charger use DC power supply, the range of CP620 voltage input is from 11V to 30V. People who use CP620 can setup the low input voltage alarm to keep the battery will never over-discharged if use a battery pack as the power supply. As the other RADIOLINK products, CP620 still have wrong input protection, even the charger connected with power source by wrong polarity, the unit will not be damaged.

(2) Applicable power supply

CP620 will lower charging current automatically and alarm at the same time to protect the power supply if charge power higher than the power of power supply, never worried about that will over-discharged the car battery if let your car work as the power supply. Since CP620 application with supper power and miniwatt power supply, users can choosing power supply depends on the power of battery that ready to charge.

(3)Charge with large power

CP620 deliver full 750 Watt output over the whole input voltage range of 11V - 30V. But suggest use a 24V power supply if the power over than 500 Watt to ensure the higher efficiency and keep lower charger temperature.

Most of the high power LiPo batteries are four to six cells. Based on the principle of power equation, a fully six cells battery is 25.2V charge with 30A at least need a 24V, 31.5A or a 12V, 63A power supply. While, the greater input-output voltage difference of power supply, the lower efficiency conversion for DC/DC charger.

3. Dual channel or single channel

Since CP620 is a hybrid charge, there are seven independent power supply built-in(one for 30A charging, other six for 6A balance), much different from the rapid balance bypass charger which only one power supply integrated. CP620 will very big if keep the CH1 and CH2 working at the same time.

So CP620 is a one-pack-at-a-time charger. It charges the first pack then automatic moves on to the second. It is not a dual charger in the normal sense as it does not charge two packs simultaneously.

While CP620 faster than a conventional 30A charger since it does not have the slow bleed process to balance the cells at the end of charge. Each cell will top up very quickly on an individual basis.

4.Charging time

The max balance current of icharger 308 is 1.2A while CP620 can up to 6A.

For example: charging a relatively new battery by the charger balance bypass, the balance time will longer than the charge time. Let us suppose charge and balance keep the same time, 50% for charge and 50% for balance. CP620, the independent balance charger, the balance time is only one fifth of icharger 308, so the totally charge time(both charge and balance) of CP620 is 60% of icharger 308(theoretically speaking).

5. Quality

CP620 takes about two years and five months for development and testing.

Radiolink pay much attention to performance, reliability and security, just want to give RC fans a better product.

There are about 20 RC fans have used CP620 for a long time before Radiolink ready to market launch.

All the CP620 are tested more than 12 hours with 30A of 40 degree centigrade temperature before to the market.

No using problem feedback as so far for the first more than 100 CP620 no mater in China or overseas.

6. Energy Conversion Efficiency

(1) Energy conversion efficiency when charging through power wire CP620 uses advanced Synchronous buck-boost DC/DC converter technology, high power, high current and high-performance power conversion circuit.

The maximum charge power capacity of CP620 up to 750W, the maximum charge current of channel up to 30A.

Since CP620 has the hybrid control system, part of the circuit will increase about 3% power consumption.

(2) Energy conversion efficiency when charging through balance wire CP620, with six independent power supply integrated ensure max 6 cells charging for each port, the max balance current for each cell will up to 6A, totally different from icharger 308 that balance by resistance.

The efficiency of CP620 up to 95% charging through balance wire, much higher than icharger 308 which only up to 50%. The temperature of CP620’ motherboard always less than 70 degree and the surface temperature of CP620 always less than 50 degree charge with the same current as the much same chargers.

7. The max charge current

The max charging current of CP620 is 30A for 6cell LiPo battery, the max power of CP620 is 750W.

Named CP620 just because ready to make the charge current keep to 20A at the very beginning. Later, CP620 engineer make the charge current up to 30A based on RC fans suggestions.

8. Multitype battery support

Compatible with the 1-6cell LiHV, LiPo, Lilo, LiFe, 1-16cell Ni-MH battery, Ni-Cd battery and 1-15cell Pb battery.

USB flash disc upgrade support. Connect to computer through USB cable-Format--Copy--Upgrade done. Easily upgrade.

Pay attention: CP620 only support max 6cell LiPo battery, do not connect LiPo battery more than 6 cells. Do not mix batteries of different types, different capacities or from different manufacturers.

9. Pulse current charge or not

There are two kind of charge mode: Constant-current charge and pulse current charge.

Pulse current charge is much better than constant-current charge on depolarization, energy conversion and battery circularly used time. Corresponding, pulse current charge take a higher requirements for software and hardware design.

CP620 is the pulse current charger and icharger 308 is the constant-current charger.

You can judge the charger is pulse current charger or constant-current charger by observe the current of power supply, current always keep the same means the charger is constant current charger while current pulsation output is pulse current charger.
